Clarity Simplicity’s 6 reasons why you should not date a lawyer. Being in a relationship with a lawyer may sound attractive, but it’s maybe not as fun as you would think it would be. We don’t really don’t make very good partners – in the romantic sense, at least. Here are six reasons to stay away from a romantic relationship with a lawyer.

1. The worst date nights ever

You can expect your partner to bring the strains of work home with them when they finally get a breather from the constraints of target billable hours. A bottle of wine and a movie on the living room sofa? The perfect lawyer date night includes two hours of tears, random email checking, occasional angry outbursts, and three surprise phone calls from important clients.

2. Arguing with a lawyer is futile

There is nothing wrong with couples disagreeing occasionally. It acts as a stress reliever and is indicative of a healthy relationship. That is why battling a lawyer is so aggravating – they attempt to shut you down at every opportunity and I will have no doubt have WhatsApp’s group chat evidence to back it up. You’re having a private dispute in your living room one minute, and the next thing you know, your partner is cross-examining your next-door neighbour’s witness testimony. You’re not going to win this one, unfortunately.

3. The borderline OCD organisation

Lawyers are notorious for being robotically organised in their daily activities. Expect Google calendar to take centre stage as your browser homepage, you can bid farewell to any aspirations of spontaneous romantic trips (they won’t be able to take time off work anyway).

4. You’ll always be second best

Lawyers prioritise their job. Regardless of how long you’ve been dating, the overwhelming sense that ‘they simply don’t care about me’ is difficult to escape. You will undoubtedly always be their second most significant ‘partner’ in life.

5. Caffeine addiction is a serious problem.

When your companion comes to visit, you can nearly overdose on the caffeine fumes flowing in your room. The coffee, the Diet Red Bull… and the time you slipped on a half-empty packet of Pro Plus at the top of the stairs and nearly died, all small reminders that a caffeine addiction problem has taken control.

6. Solicitors view the world through law-tinted glasses

Solicitors are notoriously passionate about everything, so it’s unavoidable that your romantic date night, which you spent days organising, will disintegrate into a heated and unwelcome dispute. You have just poured your pint from your home draft machine and were just attempting to explain the storey of Tina from the hairdressers moving in with her Brother when you find yourself in the middle of a legal debate on the benefits and drawbacks of the Landlord and Tenant Act.
