The news that actor Johnny Depp and his wife Amber Heard are to divorce after only 15 months of marriage has been widely reported in the media.
The latest reports suggest that the couple did not sign a prenuptial agreement before getting married.
Having a prenuptial agreement in place can be beneficial for many marriages, not just those of the rich and famous. They set out in advance how a couples’ assets will be shared out should the relationship end in divorce, and can also be used to determine other post-marital arrangements, such as issues involving children.
Johnny Depp is reported to have a net worth of around $400 million, and under California law, in the absence of a prenuptial agreement, Ms Heard should be entitled to at least 50% of the amount the couple’s combined wealth increased by during their marriage. According to some estimates, Ms Heard is likely to receive around $20 million, reports Page Six.
Her divorce papers apparently included a claim for spousal support, legal fees and the couple’s penthouse in Los Angeles, but so far she has only been awarded temporary possession of the property.
